February GLTECH Students with Disabilities In-Service

Thank you for "blogging" your February In-Service Evaluation comments. Below are questions that the Special Needs department would like you to think about while blogging.
1) Did the Rules & Regulations Session clarify any misconceptions you may have regarding ‘Accommodations’ vs. ‘Modifications’?

2) Were there any areas in regard to Rules & Regulations that were not specifically addressed?

3) Please list questions you have about how to work with students with reading disabilities in your classroom?

4) How did the reading presentation help you understand reading disabilities and effects on student performance in your classroom?

5) Did the workshop present new information that will be useful to you in your classes? If so, explain.

6) Do you have any suggestions for further Special Ed. In-Services?

It was wonderful

The rules and regulations were clearly described to all staff prior to todays inservice. It seemed like everyone im my group had all the answers correct on the survey prior to going over the survey.

I liked the video that addressed behavior with humor.

Overall the workshop was helpful. I learned some new information however I would have liked to spent more time on implementing strategies.

I liked today's inservice due to the fact that the sessions were quick and informative. Special education is a valuable asset that all educators take part in. In terms of rules and regulations, I already implement those types of rules that are conducive to learning and succeeding. But, I am always willing to learn new and different stategies. For future special education in-services, I suggest we learn more about the services like study skils, TOPS, etc.

I found the in-service very informative.

In-Service was very informative. I currently have some students that need assistance and was unaware of what I should do. Thank You.

Will use The torso approach to help students with essays. This session was the most helpful of th e three sessions. Glad to haveDCAP resource guide.

1) No, I had talked to someone taking a course on Special Needs students in the general track, so I felt well informed on this issue already

2)I felt this area was comprehensive and the presenters were happy to answer questions

3)I have no questions at this time.

4)I did not attend the reading presentation.

5)No, it was not particularly new information, but the math presentation gave me a better appreciation of the struggle that some of my students face.

6)Not at this time

Good review of some things we knew but do not use every day

I beleive the inservice was effective, and it was informative to all the teachers in attendance.

Always nice to refresh my memory as to rules and regulations.
I aml ooking forward to utilizing the technology of the Smartboard that has been made available in special needs.

As useful as ever.

All the materials that were handed out will be helpful. I found the inservice to be somewhat informative but a lot of the information was geared towards the new teacher.

Though I knew a bit about the regulations and modifications before today, I found that the presenters summed ideas up well and it was great to have a "refresher" session. Each presenter explained ideas thoroughly and answered all questions that we had with detail and expertise. The reading session, with using the computer, was amazing. It was great to be put in the shoes of one of our kids and to see through their eyes what they go through each day. The Behavior session gave some helpful hints on classroom management and brought about a great discussion concerning personal experience. Overall, everyone did very well.

Anonymous said...

I had learned the majority of the material previously.
Everything seemed to be addressed well.
Are there some strategies to be able to work with those you need more attention with reading while allowing others to work at their own pace?
It wasn't all new information however it was good to review it.

The regulation session was informative and well run in room 3447. The math IMC session was not smooth. I wonder what is done in the 7th and 8th grades with our SPED students. The behavior session went smooth. I still have questions about giving info at open house or at other times.

Very interesting and informative. Presentors were well prepared.

I thought the this in-service was very useful for a couple of my classes where i have kids with disabilities. Very Good!

I feel that even if you were informed about accomidations and modifications before todays in-service that it was helpful and was nice to have a refresher.

The reading session was very informative. It was good to have clarity on the different types of disabilities.

I did learn some things that are going to be helpful in my classroom.

As always a fabulous in-service

The math session was very well done, it is too bad that technical difficulties interrupted the presentation. This seems to happen in the IMC too often.
The presentation on regulations was very informative regarding confidentiality issues and ed plans.
The presentation on behavior was informative, more specific techniques and strategies would be helpful, perhaps at another in-service.

In-service was very useful - all three sessions were eye openers. The reading presentation did help me to better understand reading disabilities. It was helpful to be told we can use comment number 4 for our Special Ed students.

Good info for me as a new instructor. The reading exercise was enlightening.
I appreciated the classroom disruption ideas and preventative discipline info and will use starting tomorrow.
Good use of humor in presentation.

1.) Yes.
2.) I don't think so.
3.) No at this time.
4.) The reading one was not working properly, only the math was.
5.) Not any new informaton but did reinforce the need for structure in the class room.
6.) Maybe more information regarding autism.

Loved it.

Like many others, I did not have a session on reading, so I can't comment on that.

I did go to the math session and found that it could have been very interesting. The use of technology to simulate disability was interesting to me but we were palgued by technical difficulties, and the time constraints made the session fairly useless.

If we had sufficient time to interact with a functioning program, I bet it would have been really good. As it was, some ideas were shared that gave cause for thought.

The session on regulations provided nothing new.

I thought that the day went very well. The special education teacher and aids did a great job as usual. It would have been nice at times to discuss some of the individual problems and frustrations, but we were informed of the laws and websites. The 1/2 hour sessions are over so guickly, but it is a nice way to get through the day. Everyone seems to be happy and like the kids with learning disabilities, it is nice and helpful for everyone to know what to expect on days like this one. The lunch buffet is also a very important part of the day as many academic teachers, shop teachers and staff attend and mingle, which people often do not have the opportunity to do.

I liked the presentation about classroom discipline, especially the video portion. After all, if the student isn't listening--or, even worse, is disrupting the class--then any educational strategy is going to be useless. Discipline must come FIRST!

Also, the presentation on reading was helpful, although a bit thin. The teaching of reading is a very big subject, so perhaps some more resurces would have been helpful: books, Web sites, etc.

very useful information to have regarding special ed laws and excellent strategies.
this is information we all need to be aware of and implement

Absolutely.

2) Were there any areas in regard to Rules & Regulations that were not specifically addressed?

4) How did the reading presentation help you understand reading disabilities and effects on student performance in your classroom?
Indeed.

5) Did the workshop present new information that will be useful to you in your classes? If so, explain.

Thank you.

4) It help because now I can use some of the techniques that were provide in this last in-service.

I found the session on reading interesting. I think we've heard a lot of it before, but it's good to be reminded, and the activities were relevant and interesting.
I had a pretty good grasp of the general regulations, so there was nothing new there. Ditto the discipline.

2)All of this has been addressed to death

Inservice presentations were well thought out. Found all information useful. "Misunderstood Minds" was more hands on and enabled teachers to actally feel frustration of students. Handouts were helpful

Anonymous said...

Presentations were short and to the point which is OK with veteran teacher's; however, newer teachers may have profited more with more time on any one topic. More project based curriculum and students working in groups....we may need to learn better ways of keeping kids together and on track. Another productive in-service day.

good presentations- really liked Debbie Sherwood and Laurie Cahill and Frank Heslin. Would like to see Rick Lavoie come back. This is the support we need.

I liked the resources that were provided. Thanks to all of the presenters for their efforts in preparing for this informative inservice.

The workshop regarding reading problems of the learning disabled was effective. The decoding and comprehension activities gave us a feeling of what some of our students struggle with.

The "Broken Record" technique demonstrated in the video on dealing with difficult students was reminiscent of the discipline training we received last year.

I had one incorrect answer on the Special Ed. survey. I had no idea what a DCAP was. Now I know.

Anonymous said...

1. No, I already pretty much understood the difference between accommodations and modifications. Still, it was a good review.

2. No, Lisa and Sharon did a thorough and adequate job.

3. Yes, I wonder how to get kids with reading difficulties to seek help when they do not understand, To raise their hands or to come for extra help?

4. The reading presentation made me realize, from my own experience and point of view, what some of the kids are going through. It will definitely make me slow down a bit and make sure that I check for understanding before going on.

5.All of the in-services provided new practical information. Particularly enlightening were the DCAP strategies and the strategies for struggling readers.

6. Would it be possible to arrange students so that ceratin regular ed. teachers share the same students with laisions so that teams can meet to work out issues with particular kids in the way that curriculum teams work. Meet once in a while to exchange information?

Inservice was very informative and well presented!

1. Yes, I think the Rules and Regulations session helped define the distinction between the two.
2. No, the session was very comprehensive - nice job!
3. N/A
4. N/A I went to the math presentation
5. N/A I am not a classroom teacher
6. Yes, information on working with ADHD and/or Autistic students

1. I was unable to attend this.
2. N/A
3. N/A
4. It was very intersting. I couldn't believe how difficult it was for me to complete the reading tasks. Definitely an eye opener.
5. The handout on how to identify and cope with students with reading disabilities in the classroom seems to be very helpful. Some of the techniques could be used in any situation where you have to assist a student to understand what is being ask of him or her.

6. My suggestion is to have more time digest the wealth of information given.

The entire day was very helpful! Many of my questions were answered in an interesting and informative way. And, I got to play with spoons! What a great resource our special educators are - thank you for your time and expertise!

Anonymous said...

1 Yes
2 No, I thought that Tom and Jason did an outstanding job.
3 Not much of an issue
4 Helped me to keep an open mind to different levels of reading ability.
5 I think that the Lavoie clip will have the most impact on me, particularly with discipline using the "broken record" technique. I will use it at home too!!!
6 Maybe spend a full day on IEP's.
Topics could be; where to find it? how to use it? how to read it and suggestions for implementing it?
